Looking After Your Carpet - Cleaning and Maintenance

We all want our new carpet to look good for as long as possible but the reality is dirt and grit are a fact of life and spills and accidents are inevitable. There are, however, some basic measures that can be taken to extend the life of a carpet and help it look good for longer.

For example:

- Use a doormat as that will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. Use a remnant or off cut from your new carpet.

- Vacuum your carpet regularly. This will prevent dirt and grit from matting the fibres. An upright vacuum cleaner fitted with a beater bar and/or brushes is recommended for cut pile carpets. A vacuum only model is best for loop pile carpets to prevent pilling

- Carpet care treatments, should be Woolsafe approved as that means they have been scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning wool rich carpets

- Ordinary detergents such as washing up liquid or soap should not be used on carpet

- Employ a professional carpet cleaning to clean & maintain your carpets.

Carpet Care Tips:

Traffic Areas
Traffic areas are those places where people are constantly walking or working. On many occasions, even after cleaning, traffic areas may still not look clean. This is known as "traffic lane shading". Traffic Lane Shading is a condition where the traffic lanes start to look darker (or sometimes lighter) than the rest of the carpet. This is different from regular soiling because the darkness is not caused by dirt but by scratched carpet fibers that no longer reflect as much light as the rest of the carpet.

There is not much that a professional carpet cleaner can do to improve traffic lane shading. The only way to treat this condition is to prevent it. To prevent it you must limit wear on your carpet. See our top carpet care tips below.

Carpet Wear and Tear
Proper carpet cleaning and maintenance of your carpet will extend its life and preserve its appearance for many years. Clean carpets contribute to a healthy indoor environment and if maintained properly, will look better and last longer!

All carpets will eventually show signs of wear. This can create the illusion of soiling which often causes frustration and misunderstanding between homeowners and carpet care experts. Remember, when a 5 year old carpet is cleaned, the result is a clean 5 year old carpet!

Top Carpet Care Tips
Here are some ways to slow down the wear and tear process on your carpets:-

Rearrange your furniture regularly so traffic areas are changed.
Use door mats at all entrances.
Vacuum regularly using a vacuum cleaner with HEPA filter
Act quickly on spots and spills
Have family members and friends remove shoes at the door
Keep kitchen floors clean - grease and oil can be tracked onto carpets
Have carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year

Vacuum Cleaner with Hepa Filter
It is essential that you vacuum your carpets regularly with a strong, well-functioning vacuum cleaner. A good vacuum cleaner features high-efficiency filtration (HEPA). A vacuum with hepa filtration retains 99.97% of anything 0.3 microns or bigger and stops it from being circulated back into the air we breathe. Correct brush height is necessary to spread the fibers to remove embedded soils. Rental machines and personally owned machines are acceptable for use in rinsing spots and spills but should never be thought of as a replacement for periodic professional cleaning.
